Guest Post, Interview, & Giveaway: Kate Triumph by Shari Arnold

Kate Triumph by Shari Arnold
Publication date: October 16th 2014
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult

Synopsis:

Normal is so overrated. At least that’s what seventeen-year-old Kate Triumph tells herself everyday. But the truth is she lives in constant fear that someone will discover how not normal she really is. With her startling speed and her unusual ability to heal, Kate believes she’s something of a freak.

Then Andrew Shore arrives.

He claims he’s her father, sticks around for a few days and leaves her a plane ticket. “Come to Mercer Island,” he says. “Give me a chance to get to know you.” Soon Kate is floundering in a world of new: new address, new car, new high school and, of course, new father. Not to mention Zack, her intriguing new neighbor, who makes her want to abandon her steadfast rule of never allowing anyone to get too close. But when she discovers someone is trying to kill her, life for Kate gets a bit more complicated. And a lot less normal.

Excerpt:

Husky Stadium is crowded. The University of Washington’s purple flags flap loudly like applause as I stride up the stadium steps. High school students draped in their school colors are swarming the stadium in droves. Their eyes search out familiar faces and occasionally I hear my name called but not once do I acknowledge it. It’s always some other Kate, some other girl’s face that lights with recognition and smiles or waves in response.

I put my earbuds in so I don’t hear them, those other Kates and their friends. I turn the volume to loudest and jog in place.

And then I see her, one of my many ghosts. Her blonde hair is pulled back in a ponytail. She’s smiling at someone I don’t know. Their conversation is animated and fun, whatever they tell each other is so hilarious they throw their heads back or double over with laughter. You can’t fake that kind of happy. She catches me watching her when she turns to grab her backpack off the ground.

It’s not her, I tell myself. It’s never her.

And just like that I’m seven years old again.

“Don’t look down, Kate,” she’d said that day in her yard. “You’ll chicken out if you look down.”

“I’m not scared!” I yelled back. I had no reason to be.

The tree wasn’t that tall, and its branches had always held us before. My mother explained it again and again when I asked why, WHY? and why some more.

Perhaps it was the storm the night before that had weakened the tree. Or perhaps it was simply more evidence that life isn’t fair.

But Alice’s mother needed more explanation than that. She needed to know why her daughter spent three weeks in a coma due to severe head trauma while I — the girl who cushioned her daughter’s fall by hitting the cement first — didn’t even need a check-up.

“It’s just one of those things,” my mother explained first to the doctor and then over and over again to every person who asked. “A freak accident,” she called it.

But all I heard was “freak.” The word got caught up inside my head, bouncing back and forth like a tennis ball, until I thought I might go crazy.

When Alice did wake up she wasn’t the same. She had to learn how to talk, walk and eat again. And during rehabilitation she discovered her only friend had unexpectedly moved away.

“Kate?”

The voice is so close I jump. My eyes focus back on my surroundings and I notice the girl I thought I knew has moved on toward the lockers. I don’t have to look again to see it isn’t Alice. Alice was smaller, darker. And from what I’ve heard she gets around now with a cane.

“Kate?” the voice says again. “Kate Triumph?”

“Yes?” I turn and find a dark-haired girl about my age smiling at me.

“I thought it might be you. I’m such a fan,” she reaches out and touches my arm.

“What do you want?” I say.

This sets her back a bit. Her smile slips in the corners, but she soldiers on. “Seriously, everyone on my team worships you. My coach, Coach Thom over there,” she points toward the stadium at a tall, bald man who, when he notices we’re staring at him, waves a clipboard in the air. “He’d really like to meet you. He’s been talking about you all year. He keeps a chart with all of your winning times up on the wall of our gym so we know what to aim for.”

“I’m sorry,” I interrupt. “Is there something you need?” This isn’t the first time I’ve been approached by someone at a track meet. But I’m not looking to make friends today. No point. Friends are complications. And complications are something I’ve got enough of already.

The girl shifts her feet and forces her smile back in place with an enviable effort. “I just wanted to introduce myself. I’m Lyla.” She holds out her hand and I take it reluctantly.

“And this is my friend, Todd.”

Suddenly there’s a guy at her side. I didn’t even notice him. He must have been standing just behind me.

“Hi, Kate,” Todd’s voice is deep. Like he’s swallowed something heavy. His eyes move down my body and get stuck somewhere between my waist and shoulders. I should tell him my eyes haven’t been at the height since I was seven, but I honestly don’t care.

“It’s nice to meet you,” I say, “but I really need to check in with my coach.” I try to move away when Lyla reaches out and grips my arm. Her fingernails dig into my skin.

I glance down at her hand, more than slightly annoyed, but she doesn’t release me.

“I understand, Kate. But can you, please, promise to come say hi to my teammates? It would really mean a lot to them.” Her eyes are pleading, her voice is pleading. I wonder if Lyla ever hears the word, no. I look at Todd to find the answer but he’s moved over to a large group of boys standing near the fence.

“Sure, okay,” I say. But it’s a lie.

Guest Post:  Best Male Characters

Whether I’m reading YA or women’s fiction I have to admit, I love a little romance in my story. And when it comes to the best male characters I’ve read I definitely have a list.

Patch

If you are in need of a rebellious fallen angel than go pick up Becca Fitzpatrick’s Hush, Hush series. The strong, dark, and not-so-silent angel type really works for him.

St. Clair

Oh, boy. St. Clair is probably one of my favorite characters ever! There is something so genuine and real about him that after reading Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins I completely believed he was someone I knew in real life. Or wanted to know.

Robin Hood

I am a huge fan of Robin Hood EVERYTHING. But A.C. Gaughen’s Scarlet series is for reals. There is no better Robin Hood out there. Like, seriously. If I ever discover that the real Robin Hood was anything other than how she wrote him I will be VERY disappointed.

Noah

So, yeah. Michelle Hodkin’s Mara Dyer Trilogy is insane, but in a good way. And her Noah is breathtaking. He is intriguing, intense and mysterious. OH! And also very loyal. Need I say more?

Edward

Yeah, yeah, I know. But I’m talking about the Edward from the book not the movie. The movie Edward wasn’t nearly as good as the book Edward. Sorry, guys. But that’s my opinion. And if I’m being completely honest I will always love Twilight’s Edward the best. Not the Edward from the other three books that followed. Just the first one.

Who are your favorites?

Interview

When did you first know you wanted to write?

I used to write poetry as a child. I was seriously obsessed with Shel Silverstein. And then as I got older the stories I told myself got longer and more complicated. Telling stories is something I’ve always done, whether through photography or writing novels. I’m completely intrigued by people and what they do with their time. And I believe that everyone has a story. I don’t always want to hear it, but I’m intrigued nonetheless.

What are some of your favorite YA novels?

I’ve found that some of my favorites are trilogies. My sister and I always tease how some of the characters we love are like our friends and when you get to continue to hang out with your friends it’s a very good thing. My favorite trilogies I’ve read recently are: Rae Carson’s Girl of Fire and Thorns, Sarah J. Maas’ Throne of Glass and Veronica Rossi’s Under the Never Sky.

Do you ever experience writer’s block?

There are a few things I try when I’ve hit a wall. Showers or walks usually help the ideas flow for me and music is a huge part of my writing. I can’t start writing until I’ve found just the right “feeling” for the story and that ALWAYS comes from a song or a couple different songs. With KATE I found my feeling in the song 23 by Blonde Redhead.

Will there be a KATE TRIUMPH 2?

There will definitely be a second KATE. There is so much more to her story. So very much more.

New Release & Interview: Pathogen by E.L. Loraine & Tim Frasier

What if the government doesn’t want a cure?
A blinding light in the Southwestern sky changed everything. Nothing worked anymore and all Alexis could do was hope that her boyfriend and fellow scientist Jackson would still head to New Orleans for their week end together.

She couldn’t help thinking the worldwide pockets of viral outbreaks and this were
somehow connected. If she and Jackson combined their efforts just maybe they could stop this before it became an epidemic.

Now she was stuck on the road alone and it wasn’t long before she
realized it was too late; they couldn’t out run a virus. If the world was over run all they could do now all they could do was to figure out how to survive and keep the uninfected from becoming, mindless, flesh eating monsters. Now there’s something else, a mutation a strain of virus the government doesn’t want to cure and they want Alexis and Jackson to help them harness it. They aren’t about to let that happen.

The world and character building of best-selling author E.L. Loraine with the specialty horror telling skills of Tim Frasier has combined in this
dystopian – Pathogen. It’s chilling in an all too believable way.

B&N:

Here are a few short Teasers from Pathogen!!

Teaser #1
While Jackson’s exterior was the definition of calm and control, he was screaming inside. He had to get Alexis out of New Orleans. He approached the compound commander, Major Johnston, and made a calculated plea.
“I need to get to New Orleans. One of the world’s top pathologists is there, and would be invaluable in fighting whatever we’re up against.”

Teaser #2
Alexis frowned, gun at the ready, and continued up the stairs, alleviating further squeaking by positioning her feet on the extreme sides of the treads.
She stopped at the landing and stood there holding her breath, listening, trying to decide what to do. Moving to the door to her right, sure the whimpering sound was coming from that room, she slowly reached out to the knob.
In one movement she twisted the knob, and shoved the door hard. The door swung to her right, banging on the wall behind it. Lexy moved through the opening and into the interior of the room with her gun close to her body, rotating first to the left and then to the right.
Nothing.

Teaser #3
She moved further inside, aiming the pistol back and forth, as she looked through the room.
She gulped and took herself in hand, preparing inwardly for the next move.
Stepping to the closet door she took another quick breath, gripped the knob and pulled it open.

Immediately, something inside the closet screeched and Lexy dropped down to one knee, gun extended, with a screech of her own.

I grew up in a small northern Minnesotan town, married my high school sweetheart, had two beautiful children and as soon as we could, we moved to a warmer climate. I have worked with my husband building and decorating custom homes for years. After loving every kind of vampire book, movie, and series, I decided that I wanted to know more. I can write a book I thought, how hard can that be? Well….very hard. But I stuck to it and finished my first book Royal Blood Chronicles Book One, Katrina, The Beginning, in August 2009. There are now nine books in that series; The Protectors, The Dark Prince, Cain, the Quest, Bloodline and Legacy, Redemption and Destiny, and book nine Sabine, with book ten- Power of the Secret -out this fall.
I’ve also started to write mystery/suspense contemporary adult romances under my E.L. Loraine brand. The first release is Corporate Ties, A Silken Ties Novel, the second a sweeter romance – Western Escape. A second Silken Ties Novel will be released in August 2014.

The feedback has been great. I have also released Phantom Lives – Collier, and new paranormal series, book two of that series Phantom Lives – Power, book three to be out around Christmas. I also have just published book one of my Shifter Chronicles – Green River. My parents always told me that I could do anything that I wanted, work hard, study, and do it right. I believe that and live that way every day.

I started writing this new vampire series for teens and their moms because I myself wanted something different to read. I was tired of all the modern versions of vampire books, there had to be more to these long lived beings. Where had they been, what had they seen? I wanted, no I NEEDED to know more so Royal Blood Chronicles was born! Strong female characters and action and adventure mixed with romance, friendship and a historical backdrop. Phantom Lives continues with another strong female character, which is very important to me. Phantom Lives is a modern day, paranormal romance, filled with mystery, magical places and beings.

A Red Coat PR Interview!

RCPR: Your newest book, PATHOGEN releases onOctober 28th.  Tell us a little about it.
Elizabeth: I was invited to write a short story for an anthology and worked with Tim Frasier on a piece. We just clicked, and I asked him if he would write this story with me, an idea I’d had for a while. Two scientists, who are in a long distance relationship are set to meet each other again in New Orleans when the world suddenly changes. Pathogen has been released and an EMP has taken out almost all communications, electrical and power. Now the main characters, Alexis and Jackson are trying to get to each other. The government and other factions also want them to stabilize the Pathogen, if not cure it. Both sides want to control it for their own purposes. So they, along with a band of people who they’ve joined or helped along the way are on the run.
RCPR: I have to say, your cover is a mixture of stunning and freaky.  What inspired the idea for the cover and who was your designer?
Elizabeth: Conzpiracy Digital Arts does most of my covers, he’s amazing, but horror is his specialty. I only have to give him a concept and then get out of the way. This scientist has been infected. Because it’s true; you can’t run from a virus.
RCPR: Your tag line, “What if the government doesn’t want a cure” is amazing!  Do you personally believe in government conspiracies or does it just make for a good book?
Elizabeth:  Oh I love a good conspiracy and I believe they go on. Yes I believe not every faction of the government knows everything about the others. It’s scary, that’s what makes it good.
RCPR: PATHOGEN is a co-written venture that you partnered with Tim Frasier on.  How did you find the process of co-writing to be?
Elizabeth: It was amazing and while Tim wasn’t sure if it would work it has and our style and our imaginations mess seamlessly. It started out by Tim writing Jackson’s part and I wrote Lexy’s point of view. Once they were together however we just took turns, each writing around 1000 words a day and passed it back and forth. We had the first book done in six weeks, the second in an additional five weeks. We wrote a novella, a prequel next and will start the third book next week. I have to say it was soooo fun. It was like Christmas morning every day waiting to read what he’d written and adding to the story.
RCPR: Aside from the horror/thriller genre, what other genre’s have a dabbled in?
Elizabeth: I started writing YA fantasy and paranormal, but now I also write romance/mystery and thrillers too. I find it keeps writing exciting to try new things and engage a new audience.
RCPR: With the new year quickly on approach, are there any new writing goals that you’re thinking of setting for yourself in 2015?
Elizabeth: I am expanding my YA series Royal Blood Chronicles and Phantom Lives as well as my Lillian, a Vampire tale series. We will continue the Pathogen series or maybe a spin off or something new. Silken Ties, the adult romance/thriller series will get two novels next year as well.
RCPR: As an author, the more you write the better you become.  Have you ever been tempted to go back and re-work your first books?  Did you?
Elizabeth: I have been through all of them again yes, and may do it again. You’re always learning so I may do a re-write on the first books again. That’s what’s so great about self publishing, you’re in charge.
RCPR: Do you tend to do a lot of research for your books or do you like to create new rules and history?
Elizabeth: I do a lot of research, but it is fiction after all, so I mix the real history with my fiction. I do the same with anything I’m writing. If it’s about the FBI, the military, government, serial killers, whatever. I do the research. I really enjoy that part of writing.
RCPR: If you could spend a day in any time period in history, which would it be and why?
Elizabeth: I think I’d like to see the early West so mid 1800’s would be my choice, but all history fascinates me. Walk with Louis and Clark.
RCPR: What is your biggest writing pet peeve? Why?
Elizabeth: Writing the dreaded blurb! I hate condensing an entire novel into a two paragraph blurb and I know I’m not the only one.

BOOK BLURB / SYNOPSIS

Someone’s trying to kill Deanna, but is it the ghosts she doesn’t believe in, the rich socialite who might be a murderess, or someone else with a beef against The Gilroy Hotel and Resort that Deanna has just been hired to manage? The Gilroy’s owners want the ghosts, or whoever is causing the trouble at the hotel eliminated, and they are pressuring Deanna to do the job as quickly as possible. Harry DeVeaux, paranormal investigator comes highly recommended to do the job and against Deanna’s better judgment, she hires him.

Although Deanna thinks Harry’s crazy for believing in ghosts and Harry thinks Deanna has a closed mind to the possibilities of ghosts and they highly annoy each other, sparks fly. Deanna can’t help but fantasize about Harry and inspired by a romance convention visiting her hotel, writes her fantasies in a private blog that Harry finds, hacks, and reads. Ooh la la!

EXCERPTS

It would also be a shame to let a private hotel room go to waste when it contained such a beautiful sexy woman, so he moved closer and leaned against the wall beside her, letting his breath tickle her neck as he gazed down at her. He lifted a strand of her silky hair and let it sift through his fingers. Her heady scent wafted up to him, making him want to bury himself in her. Was it cherries? Maybe apple blossoms? “My heart almost gave out when your car went up in flames and I saw you thrown back. I was afraid you’d been hurt…or worse.”

Her breath caught audibly, and she worried her lower lip with her small, perfect teeth for a moment. Then she gazed up at him with sorrowful eyes. “It must have reminded you of losing your wife.”

“Not for a minute. I was worried you were hurt. That I’d lose you.” He traced the line of her jaw with the pad of his thumb and shivered when he felt her tremble. So she wasn’t immune to him. Good. Very good.

Her lashes fluttered and her irises grew dark. She shrank against the wall as if unsure what to do next. Then resolution gathered in her eyes. “Oh! Well, uh, I should go. I’m sure I’ve been missed. A manager never rests.” To his dismay, she ducked under his arm and escaped to the door. When she tried to turn the handle, however, it wouldn’t budge. Then she tried to turn the knob with both hands, pulling hard. Her eyes flashed fire. “What the hell? Can you help me? I can’t get out.”

“Do you really have to go? Or do you just want to get away from me? Am I that repellant?”

She looked as if she’d rather have fire ants crawl up her legs than answer his question.

Before she could respond, he jumped in. “I have a confession.”

She stopped trying to jar the door and her attention riveted on him, her forehead puckering. “Did you do something I need to know about?”

Drawing in a long, shuddering breath, he look heavenwards and crossed his fingers behind his back hoping she wouldn’t throw something at him, hoping she’d be okay with his admission. “I found your blog and read it.”

Paling, the blood fled from her flesh and her eyes looked like sooty coals against her face. Her gaze clashed with his and held. “How did you find it? I used a pseudonym and I put it on privacy settings.”

He screwed up his lips, and scrubbed his hand over his face, preparing to tell more painful truths. “I’m a bit of a hacker and I like to research the people I’m working with.” Not sure she’d be receptive to his theory, he left out the part that he thought the ghosts led him to her sight. He thought they were closet romantics. He wouldn’t be surprised if they’d locked them into the room now to force them into some alone time together.

When a tsunami of emotions flitted across her face he tried to read them. Fury. Embarrassment. Lust?

“You investigated me? You read my private musings?”

“You wrote about me? In some very intimate ways. At least I presume it was me since you used my name.” He fixed her with a piercing gaze. “Did you?”

Review - 3 Stars!

This short, erotic paranormal read was just that.  A short erotic read with just enough ghosts to be a good asset to your Halloween reading list.  The writing was decently done, a few awkward phrases, and if one more person said "I'm going to talk to my attorneys" or "I'm going to sue you!" I was going to make a drinking game out of it.  Seriously, I could see it happening a couple times, but every, single person who was upset in that novel?  Threatened lawyers and suing.  Definitely needed someone threatening with egging or TPing the hotel or something instead.  It was a bit over done.

The sex scenes - while the actual sex only happened like twice - was sporadically spread throughout the short read, so that was nice.  And they cared about each other, although I did feel it was a bit rushed.  Of course, I usually read romance (that may or many not have explicit sex scenes) and not erotica for very this reason.  However, it wasn't all about sex.  They also had realistic sex and not completely out of the realm of the possible sex.  So THAT was awesome.  The erotica was very well done.  Although certain areas I weren't exactly sure would have ever happened - nude beach or not.  (Their sex was fine, but the others' reactions to them I mean)  BUT I know almost nothing about them, soooo.... I can't say.  ^_^;

I didn't really feel much for the main character too much, she seemed seriously shallow during her first blog fantasy with regards to looks and that nearly killed any empathy I had for Deanna at all.  She did get better though.  I liked Harry, although he was too quick to fly off the handle for someone who was running a business that probably dealt with skeptics more often then they dealt with believers.

The author did a very nice job of researching the behind the scenes running of a hotel.  It was very realistic from the bit I do know about hotels from work working in them when I was a teenager.  Honestly, TOO good a job.  For the shortness of the story, there should have been less extra details that didn't progress the story.  The soccer students and the romance writers convention each had a purpose, really.  The interviews that stretched out to include over five (?) different people was too much detail when no one appeared again in the story.  I would have MUCH rather read more Harry/Deanna interaction or more ghost stuff.

As for the overall plot, a tad predictable, with a twist big enough to surprise me even.  Not the main big bad of course, that I guessed.   But a few added ones thrown in.  The only thing plot wise I was dissatisfied with was that the big bad villain never really admitted to the car bomb.  I mean, for all we know it could have been the secret villain.  Or the co-villain.

Overall, I liked it.  Good sexy read with enough Halloween flare!  3 stars!

Interview

When did you start writing?

I began writing as soon as I learned how to read and write – about age five or six. I was always writing stories when I was growing up – mainly for my dad but I entered a couple into writing competitions.

What made you decide to start becoming a published author?

Ever since I watched Superman with Lois Lane I wanted to be a published journalist like her. And when I discovered Harlequin romances when I was a teenager I knew I wanted to write some of my own.

I wrote my first Harlequin-type romance when I was in college back in the late 1980’s. That one was never published, surprise surprise.

Which authors inspired you?

A lot of the original Harlequin authors: Anne Mathers, Violet Winspear, Margaret Rome, Anne Hampson, Carole Mortimer, Flora Kidd.

Which are your favorite authors at the moment?

Sherryl Woods, Stephen King, and Stephen White.

Which genre do you generally write in?

Contemporary romance, often romantic comedy. Within that I have different romantic couplings: mf/mm/mfm/mmf/mmm

How many unpublished stories do you have?

Only two, or three if you count my work in progress. That’s not bad knowing I’ve had about 74 published stories.

What have you written?

It’s a very long list – about 74 published romances. My recent ones are: Cooking Up A Storm, Business or Pleasure, Her Men, and Spooky Sojourn and Pretend Lover are coming soon. A couple of my bestsellers are American Beauty, Purrfect Justice, The Perfect Gift, and Pirate’s Booty.

What are you working on at this moment?

“Gaycation” which is an MMF about Molly who is an erotic MM romance writer who takes her vacation to attend a gay convention so she can get more story ideas. When her day job boss shows up (she’s still in the closet about her writing) at the same convention, she gets way more than she bargained for.

What is your favorite type of hero/protagonist to write? Bad boys? Damaged men? The boy next door? The sensitive soul?

I love men like Indiana Jones and Rick O’Connell from The Mummy. I also loved Shang Li in Mulan and Alex Hopper in Battleship. I’m not sure what classification they’d be or if they’re in different categories. They’re all good men so not bad boys – except for maybe Alex Hopper. I guess you’d say adventurists. In addition, I loved Kevin in 27 Dresses who is a smart-aleck. Hmmm. I guess all of the heroes I mentioned are smart alecks at some point.

What is your favorite type of heroine/protagonist to write? Feisty women? Strong women? Weak women? Flighty women?

Strong women like ‘Mulan’ who saves her hero and her country from the Huns or like Samantha in ‘Battleship’ who thwarts the invading aliens and helps to save the world. They’re still very feminine but strong, intelligent, determined women on a mission.

Julie in my recent release ‘Her Men’ is an ex-FBI agent who is currently the sheriff of her hometown in Indiana. Deanna in my upcoming release ‘Spooky Sojourn’ is the general manager of her city-sized hotel.

How hard is it to research for your novels?

It depends on the novel. During ‘Pretend Lover’ and ‘Spooky Sojourn’ I was constantly researching hotels and hotel life from the perspective of the employees.

How is your day structured to include writing?

I work a full-time 40 plus hour job weekly so it’s tough. It’s even more difficult lately since I’ve been promoting four books that are releasing back to back to back.

When I’m not doing a lot of promotion, I get to write 2-3 hours nightly after I get home from work and finish dinner for my large family. Unfortunately, I’ve been using my writing time for promotion the last couple months: writing guest posts, conducting interviews, finding new hosts for my blog tours, Facebook parties, etc.

Do you write from an outline or just where the story and characters take you?

I’m pretty much of a pantser. I start with an extremely loose outline, knowing the beginning, ending, and a few high points in the middle and I go from there. When I outline too tightly, I feel stifled, as if I’ve already written the story.

Do you get the dreaded writer's block and how do you combat it?

Unfortunately, I have. I didn’t write for almost two years until recently.

Now, if I get blocked I will re-read and edit what I’ve done in the story so I can bump myself into action again. I’ll also research new ideas or the general story theme as I go if I get stuck.

Do you prefer to read ebooks or paper books?

Ebooks! I feel like I’m on the Starship Enterprise in the future when I use my ebook reader. Also, I’m able to adjust the type for my aging eyes. And I can carry around a huge library on my phone and no one can see the cover and make comments on my reading choice. I also enjoy being able to download a book onto my phone from just about anywhere, anytime.

What TV shows & Movies are your favorite? Or the genre you prefer?

TV: I love love love ‘The Big Band Theory’ and I get cranky if I don’t get to see at least a couple episodes a day. I also enjoy watching ‘Love It or List It’ on HGTV (which drives my husband crazy as he feels our home is too small to do anything to, so that I’m wasting my time watching it). In addition, I like the cooking contests and restaurant makeovers and hidden camera shows on Food Network. Finally, I’m enjoying the new series ‘Forever’ about the coroner who keeps dying and coming back to life. Oh! And Star Trek!

Movies: Mulan, Battleship, The Mummy, While You Were Sleeping, Pillow Talk, 27 Dresses, the Indiana Jones movies, Star Trek movies

How many proofreaders/editors do you use before publishing your work?

My publisher provides one primary editor and I don’t know how many proofreaders. I know that after my editor edits my work it goes through line edits and final line edits and sometimes the executive editor will get involved.

Do you have input in your covers? Who designs them?

My publisher gives me a cover questionnaire on which I describe my heroes and heroines as well as scenery and any scenes I think would be good to show on the cover. Emmy Ellis is the cover artist at Totally Bound which is where my current story is published.

What are your thoughts on good & bad reviews? (We aren't counting bashing reviews, simply negative reviews that are respectful)

I’ve read various trains of thought about this. When the reviews provide reasons why they liked or disliked the story that’s very helpful insight to help me when writing future stories. I appreciate the suggestions as long as they are stated respectfully.

Although I would love to garner all five star reviews, or at least all four and five star reviews, that may not seem realistic to readers. They may suspect that only friends and family are providing the reviews. As much as I dislike one and two star reviews, I’ve read that they generate a lot of interest for a book. They pique readers’ curiosity and they often want to see if they agree with the rating. Thus low reviews don’t necessarily kill a book. No promotion (aka no reviews) is much worse than a poor review. (I hope.)

How do you relax? Or activities you use to relax?

I love to go the movies and watch stories on the big, silver screen. I was really in a movie mood last night and so I dragged my daughter to see the new Jason Bateman/Jane Fonda movie at our local theater.

What is your favorite quote?

Live long and prosper by Spock. I’m a huge Trekkie.

But I also love Marion’s line in Raider’s of the Lost Ark when she sees Indy for the first time in years "Indiana Jones. I always knew some day you'd come walking back through my door. I never doubted that. Something made it inevitable."

Is there anyone who supports you that you couldn't do without?

My biggest supporter is my editor at Totally Bound, Faith. She’s awesome. She provides a lot of encouragement and praises my work a lot.

Unfortunately, my family is not supportive. They feel that my writing and promotion takes time away from them. Also my adult children are embarrassed by romance much less erotic romance, so they like to ignore it.

That said, my dad was very supportive of my writing. Unfortunately, he is suffering from dementia now so I’ve lost that support network.

What is the most blatant lie you've ever told?

Wow! What a question. I guess it’s when I refer to my oldest child as “he” at my day job instead of “she”. My oldest child is transgender female. She actually used to work with me and a lot of my coworkers still ask how “he” is doing. Or when I talk about “her” while I’m in my office surrounded by twelve other people, I will say “him” or use her former male name. As you can see, it’s all very confusing and I slip up sometimes. I’ve told my closest friends at work about her gender change, but I’m afraid my employers and coworkers as a whole will not understand. I told one ex-friend at work about her change, and she stopped going to lunch with me or being friendly, as if it’s my decision and as if I have input on my daughter’s decision which I don’t. This is a 30 something year old adult who is paying all her own medical bills and living expenses who made the change.

Do you feel upset if you kill off one of your main characters?

Since I write romance I only kill off villains, never the protagonists and rarely their good supporting characters. Except for once when I blew up Earth (Eternal Damnation) and I felt pretty horrible committing genocide. I have to remind myself, however, that it was really the evil space vampire who did the slaughter, not me.

And then I redeemed him by going more than a thousand years into the past in the sequel where love saved him so that in the new future, he no longer blows up Earth.

Coffee or Tea?

Coffee (although honestly I drink very little and then only pumpkin spiced coffee).

How do you take your coffee?
Pumpkin spiced only so I usually only drink this in the Autumn. Usually I drink diet Pepsi.

Starbucks or Seattle's Best? Or what IS your favorite coffee shop?

Starbucks.

If you don't drink coffee, what the HECK do you do to stay motivated without THE best beverage known to man?

I drink tons of diet Pepsi – so much that not only my family but my friends are on my back to go cold turkey or at least to cut WAY back.

If you don't drink coffee, what is WRONG with you, woman/man!?! (I'm teasing, really... although if you hate coffee you might have a screw loose... *hee* I love you!!)

I’m an addict! To diet cola. I crave it. But when I drink coffee it has to have pumpkin spice or at least tons of milk and sugar.

How many cats do you own?

Four – I’m a crazy cat lady wanna be. I would adopt more if I could afford them. Even if I could afford more, I can’t take any more in as my family has threatened to walk if I bring one more animal home. The funny thing about that is that when we found a kitten under our house last year, it was my daughters who brought her in, nursed her to health, and demanded we keep her (which we did).

As a Trekkie, do you go to conventions? Perhaps speak Klingon? Or simply just love the Star Trek universe?

I’ve never been to a Star Trek convention although I’d love to go. I was supposed to go to one on a date thirty something years ago and my date cancelled. I was really disappointed.

Unfortunately, I don’t know a word of Klingon. The only second language I know is shorthand. Does that count as a language?

But I watch Star Trek a lot.

(I'm not really making fun, I'm an anime fangirl and some of the people that go to those conventions are as dedicated as Trekkies. ^_^)

Do you write about military men and women because it is something you're very familiar with as an Air Force vet, kind of like the old adage, write what you know? Or you just REALLY like the military men and women?

Both. I tend to write about what I know whether it’s military characters or something else. However, I really admire military men and women and they also fascinate me (especially the men). My favorite movie is “Mulan”. I know it’s a cartoon, but the heroine goes into the military to save her father and after struggling to learn how to fight she ends up kicking all the men’s butts and saving the man she loves – as well as saving her country. It’s the perfect story (for me anyway).

(I'd like to take the time here to say thanks for your service to our country!! I sincerely support our military and have the utmost respect for anyone who can survive serving (and I don't mean death in war and such, I mean the actual training, because I am a super wimp).)
Lastly, how does your life experiences show up in your stories?

In many ways.

In my March 2015 release ‘Pretend Lover’, the heroine has a cleft palate like me. It’s not a pivotal story point as frankly, it hasn’t made a big difference in my life since I was a child taking weekly speech classes and going through many surgeries.

In ‘Self Defense’ the hero is an ex-soldier with hearing loss which does make a big impact on his life. I’m also former Air Force with hearing loss. I based his character a lot on me.

Sometimes funny things my kids do work their way into my stories too. When my oldest child was in high school she hacked into the school’s computer system and changed the vice principal’s password to “Jack Ass”. I’m not condoning her actions and I was scared to death when I was first told—uh hum—threatened that my child might be slapped with a felony offense (if it turned out she had damaged the school’s computers which fortunately she didn’t). Although I was mortified, everybody else laughed their asses off when I told the story. And wouldn’t you know? The school turned around and hired my daughter to work on their computer system after she got off school in the afternoons – for pay. I guess they couldn’t have been too mad. That scenario became the basis for one of my stories – alas out of publication. It was a good one.

Review - 4 stars!

I love some YA and sometimes I just hate it.  I wasn't sure which way this one would go as the premise had the potential to be an amazing read or a disastrous cliche.  After all, I wasn't that impressed by cover or synopsis yet.   I have to say I was pleasantly amazed once I began to read!   If you want a deliciously emotional YA romance, you have to read this book!

I really empathized with Mackenzie and found that I liked her immensely.  And of course, the type of man (or boy) I like to read is the bad boy of any flavor, so Hayes was an instant hit with me.  The bond between these two was beautiful to behold and I was honestly sad when the book ended.  Part of this was due to Brad of course.  All the characters had their own personality and depth to them, each with their own issues and dramas, and it was nicely realistic.

The story itself was a bit simplistic, but there isn't anything wrong with that if the author can pull it off.  J.D. Rivera DID pull it off.  The attraction of the main characters and their emotional upheavals were enough the rest of the plot didn't need to be too involved.  It could have even detracted from the characters' issues enough that we lost some of that emotion if JD had expanded her plot when it didn't need to be.  It kept the story fast paced enough that I almost read this in one-sitting.  I had to find out what happened next!

Also, writing was nicely done for a YA novel.  Word choices and phrasing was done excellently for the age in which it was intended.  There were a few parts I was like "Huh?!" when someone said something unbelievable (to me anyway), but that's just me.  Nothing that detracted from the story and nothing I wrote a specific note for even.

Overall, it was well-paced & well-written, beautifully emotional, and excellently scripted.  I can't wait for more from this author!  4 stars!

Author Interview

When did you start writing?

I've always had stories in my head but I was an adult before I actually started writing.

Which authors inspired you?

I have way too many to list but some of my favorite authors include Colleen Hoover, Sylvain Reynard, and Rebecca Donovan.

Which are your favorite authors at the moment?

At the moment, I love Jessica Sorensen. I just finished one of her books and I already want to reread it!

Which genre do you generally write in?

I like to write New Adult! For some reason, the stories flow better for me in that genre.

How many unpublished stories do you have?

I think I have around 5 maybe. I'm not sure at this point. :)

What have you written?

I've written and published: Trying to Get Over You, Guarded, Defensive, Always Friends, and as of October 13th, Chasing the Stars.

What are you working on at this moment?

I'm currently writing a novel that may have some characters from Chasing the Stars and hopefully a novella after that.

What is your favorite type of hero/protagonist to write? Bad boys? Damaged men? The boy next door? The sensitive soul?

I like them all! Ha!

What is your favorite type of heroine/protagonist to write? Feisty women? Strong women? Weak women? Flighty women?

I would like to say the feisty or strong but I've written them all.

Do you write from an outline or just where the story and characters take you?

I can't write from an outline. That's just a disaster. I have to let my characters take over.

Do you get the dreaded writer's block and how do you combat it?

Oh yes I get it! I try to just take a step back for a couple of days or go hiking someplace to clear my mind. I get the best ideas when I'm exercising.

Do you have input in your covers? Who designs them?

I have a lot of say in my covers. My amazing husband is my designer. (I don't get along with Photoshop!)

What are your thoughts on good & bad reviews? (We aren't counting bashing reviews, simply negative reviews that are respectful).

I think both are good. Of course I love great reviews, but a one star review can be a great learning tool.

How do you relax? Or activities you use to relax?

I love to go to the beach whenever I can. It relaxes me on so many levels. If I can't get to a beach, I love to walk or hike if I can find a pretty area. I love being outside!

Is there anyone who supports you that you couldn't do without?

Everyone! I'm not just saying that either. It takes so many people to publish a book!

How do you come up with character names? How do you come up with novel titles?

Character names are just names I like. I try to write at least half of the novel before I title it. I always want it to be a part of the book

How do you feel once you complete a book?

I feel relief followed by excitement! It's crazy to think that someone might read the book and characters I just created!

Coffee or Tea?

Both!!!

How do you take your coffee?

I like to put a little Splenda in it.

Starbucks or Seattle's Best? Or what IS your favorite coffee shop?

Starbucks! I love Starbucks!

If you don't drink coffee, what the HECK do you do to stay motivated without THE best beverage known to man?

I'm also a huge Diet Mountain Dew addict!

If you don't drink coffee, what is WRONG with you, woman/man!?! (I'm teasing, really... although if you hate coffee you might have a screw loose... *hee* I love you!!)

I agree!!!!
