Review - 3. 5 Stars!

This is a nice, twisted F/F adult version of the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale.  If this doesn't appeal to you, you might not enjoy this.  However, the twisted adult version of a classic fairy tale did appeal to me, despite not usually reading F/F (not really because I have anything against them, I just don't relate to them like I do M/F or even M/M.  I think this has to do with the fact I'm attracted to men, so even men attracted to men I can relate to better.  *shrug*).

The story itself is a short and quite nice retelling of Little Red Riding Hood.  It was very sensual and I actually fairly enjoyed it.  There were however a few issues I felt could have been expanded on - even with how short it was - such as conflict Rosetta felt in certain parts of the story were missing.

As Rosetta, I probably over-sympathized in this short little novella.  It had to do with people calling her RoRo.  It's been my dreaded nickname since birth (thanks to an Uncle) and have finally give up on it thanks to my brother - who still uses it, and extended it to his girlfriend, her kids, and my nephew, who is 3.  Instead of confusing him, I just let it go now.  But I absolutely hated that name growing up.

The heat in this little novel was hot even to me, and I liked the story well-enough I finished it fairly quickly.  Probably again due to empathizing with Rosetta quite a lot for most of the story.  If you like F/F or erotic spins on fairy tales (or both) this is definitely the pick for you!  3.5 Stars!

“Hold steady. Grip the stock from below with your left hand. Do not get in the way of the bolt.” Grogan stepped so close, his hardened manhood prodded Anika’s left flank. She gritted her teeth, and considered dropping her trigger finger to reach into her boot for Tara’s knitting needle.

Yes. Hold steady now, Grogan.

“Line your target between the crosshairs.”

Target in sight. Anika closed her left eye and peered through the scope with her right at the life-size outline of a male sketched in soot on an unrolled parchment scroll tacked to a tree fifty meters away. Focused on the round smudge, center torso.

Grogan pressed his stiffened manhood into the crease of her buttocks. “Squeeze…the trigger.”

Anika superimposed her instructor’s likeness onto the faceless target and discharged the bolt. The string recoiled with a pop and released the arrow. With satisfying thunk, it embedded in the target. Lowering her weapon, Anika stepped out of range of the alpha and strode to examine the result.

Right through the heart.

“Fair. For a female,” Grogan judged.

She compared her results—dead center—with Grogan’s. He’d missed the middle completely, hitting outside the outline. Perhaps the weight of his erection had unbalanced his shot.

She marched to the starting line with Grogan dogging her heels, flinging advice as wild as his aim. She shot better than every male of the Resistance, but walked a precarious path, awakening each morn to wonder if this would be the day she would fall prey to her compatriots. To Grogan, who had singled her out for special training.

But joining the Guerilla Resistance against Qalin and Artom was preferable to facing what lay outside the camp. Anika shuddered.

After leaving Marlix’s abode, she’d roamed the countryside for a week before she’d straggled into the militia group attempting to defeat Qalin and Artom. Their secret weapon?

Breeders. No one would suspect a female of being an armed fighter.

But her instructor saw no reason to abandon the old use for females. Thus far she’d dodged him, but her luck and his patience could not last much longer.

“Many females can hit the target, but few have the strength you do to cock the bowstring. You are the best female shooter by far,” Grogan conceded, his praise falling short of recognizing her true ability.

“You have trained enough for one day. Let us retire to the camp,” Grogan said. “You may bring me the midday meal.” He peered at the sky. The star of Parseon hovered overhead, its heat barely reaching the atmosphere to edge the temperature over freezing. But the chill provided an excuse to layer on multiple articles of clothing. The inconvenience of removal had saved her on more than one occasion. Still, a clothing barrier offered scant protection. Some males—Grogan—viewed impediments as a challenge.

“I feel as though I need more practice.” She peered at him from beneath downcast lashes and slumped her shoulders in a pretense of self-effacement. “May I please try one more time?”

Usually the number of people milling around afforded opportunity to avoid or divert him.

But, today, the alphas had formed two teams and split up, one group hunting for small game, another sent on reconnaissance. The females had been ordered to forage for whatever they could find to replenish the dwindling food stores. Only she—by Grogan’s command—remained in camp.

She jabbed the crossbow nose onto the ground and stepped on the metal cocking stirrup.

“You have practiced enough for one day.” Temper edged his voice.

Anika pulled back the bowstring until it locked, extracted a bolt from the quiver, and slipped it into the flight groove. Cocked and loaded, the crossbow had to be fired, for it was too dangerous to leave a loaded weapon lying about. A bump or a jolt could discharge the projectile. She raised the crossbow to shoulder height, slipped her finger off the metal guard, and caressed the trigger.

“Did you hear what I said?” Grogan’s tone sharpened. “Look at me when I speak to you!”

She snapped a sharp pivot. Through the scope, the crosshairs formed a perfect X on his chest.

His eyes bulged in alarm, and he stumbled over his feet.

Even Grogan could not fail to hit a target at such close range.

“I heard what you said,” Anika replied before turning to the parchment target and pulling the trigger. Th-th-thunk! Her bolt landed next to the previous one. Dead center. Again. She lowered the weapon.

Grogan seized her arm in a bruising grip and yanked her around to face him. “Never point a loaded weapon at me! Do you understand?” He shook her.

Anika took stock of her instructor’s reddening complexion, the slight tremor of his body, the decreased bulge in his uniform pants. Satisfaction swelled, but she bowed her head. “I apologize, alpha. When you ordered me to look at you, I had no thought but to obey.”

Stars exploded under the impact of his fist.

Review - 4 Stars!

I'm so thrilled to be finally reviewing a book more in my genre than the previous novels I have reviewed.  I just adore Sci-Fi Romance.  I don't know why, I don't usually read regular science fiction.  I have no idea why sci-fi romance ranks up there with one of my favorite genres.  Even when they aren't flying around in space.

In any case, as per my usual, I wanted to commend the art of the cover.  It was an excellent fit for this novel.  Although the series name itself made me think of a few paranormal series I adore, but there's nothing wrong with that.  I was seriously excited to venture into this series, and if I would have had time, I would have started with the first book.  However, this book can be read alone.  I just did it and I didn't feel anything was lacking in doing so.

The world that Cara Bristol created was unique and complicated enough to make one worried about the outcome of this novel and yet not so complicated it detracted from the romance and character interaction.  I loved the world of Parseon and I am looking forward to reading the first two books just to see more of this setting!  Amazing and well-done.

As for the characters, I really, really, really liked Anika.  She was strong, independent and willful.  Perfect combination for my favorite type of heroine in a romance novel.  She was well-written and had her own unique personality.  I loved Urazi as well.  Yummy.  Enough said.  And the emotional and sexual tension between these two made me do the "one more chapter before bed" dance.  It also made me stay up waaaaay too late doing so.

The story itself was well-written and kept you on the edge of your seat (or bed in my case), just to find out what happens next.  I am bummed its the end of this series!  Although I'm extremely thrilled I get to read two more in this series, but still a bit sad it's over.  It would have loved to read more!  But the ending was definitely a conclusion and unfortunately, it's done.  So nice to read a story I'm sad over.

And lastly, it was well-written with minimal errors or odd dialog issues, despite being an ARC I was reading.  I didn't want to toss anything over simple errors or mistakes.  In fact, I got so absorbed in this story, I almost forgot to take notes or pay attention to any of this!

A nice, great 4 star read I'm definitely recommending to any romance fan!

Iliona's had a rough day, so the last thing she wants is a whiny ex on her doorstep throwing accusations about which of her co-workers she's sleeping with. When he starts throwing punches and one of her hunky gargoyle co-workers rushes to her rescue, Iliona is more interested in what exactly he's been doing on the ledge outside her bedroom window...

And whether he's interested in more than watching.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place

There's nothing like a bit of Gargoyle lovin'... Unless it's double the lovin'

Iliona is used to dealing with all kinds of paranormals thanks to her job with the Paranormal Protection Agency. Even so, an office break in by a banshee nearly has her heading for the pearly gates, and she needs a little 'me time' with her live-in, live on the building lover, a gargoyle named Cal.

But Cal's got some plans of his own. Plans that involve Iliona, a candle-lit room and some up close and personal time with himself and his 'twin' Granite.

Two sets of hands, two ridged tongues, two hot bodies...Being caught between a rock and a hard place has never been so hot.

Protect and Service

One curse. One Wolf. One Night.

Eloise is a woman on a mission. She needs to find a date for the annual hospital ball, and fast. The trouble is she's not only man-free but after her bastard of an ex had a nasty little curse hurled her way, no human guy will touch her with a barge-pole. Not after one date ended up with green acne, another with a nose like Pinocchio...the list went on.

Out of options, Eloise ends up at the offices of the Paranormal Protection Agency. She's not sure what to expect but she certainly doesn't expect Jared Stone. No-one expects Stone...

Seduced by Santa

A woman determined to spread the Christmas spirit...

Former socialite turned community centre worker Candice Kane loves Christmas. In the run down area she works in, economics and rising unemployment mean that there isn't a lot of Christmas spirit to go around. Determined to do something about it, for the last couple of years she's arranged a Christmas Party, complete with a visit from Santa for the neighbourhood kids. This year though, a break in and damage from vandals means the party could be cancelled...

A Santa who hates Christmas...

Rhod is...was a Santa. For years he joined the other men in his family delivering presents, until the attitude and ungratefulness of the rich children he delivered to made him hang up his red suit. Working for the Paranormal Protection Agency, he's convinced himself that he's happier without being the big guy anymore.

When he and his partner rescue Candy from an attack in a deserted alley, all Rhod's decisions are put to the test. Can he hold out against a woman with Christmas spirit in her heart, or will he lose his own in the process?

Close Protection

Ashlee Bishop is a bar owner. She was a happy bar owner until a bunch of pixies turned up demanding protection money. As a garden-variety human, she knows she doesn't have the ability to deal with the pixies, so she calls in the Paranormal Protection Agency to sort the problem out.

What she doesn't expect is for the pixies to come back before the agency can get to the bar, or the hot as hell werewolf who shows and starts teaching pixies how to fly. The hard way.

She certainly doesn't expect to be able to command his wolf... or to have to when the shit hits the fan.

What she didn’t expect was to wake with a Warlock’s spelled collar around her neck and to find her charge, the Queen’s daughter, in a cage. Vowing to free them both will take skill and strength and she doesn’t need the distraction of a hot as hell male dragon trying to make his claim on her. Even though her heart aches to complete their joining, she can’t. Not yet.

The mission, or her heart. Can she have both? Or will she need one to complete the other?

Two HOT dragons for just 99c

Author Bio

Mina was born and raised in the East Farthing of Middle Earth (otherwise known as the Midlands, England) and spend her childhood learning all the sorts of things generally required of a professional adventurer. Able to ride, box, shoot, make and read maps, make chainmail and use a broadsword (with varying degrees of efficiency) she was disgusted to find that adventuring is not considered a suitable occupation these days.

So, instead of slaying dragons and hunting vampires and the like, Mina spends her days writing about hot shifters, government conspiracies and vampire lords with more than their fair share of RAWR. Turns out wanna-be adventurers have quite the turn of imagination after all...

(But she keeps that sword sharp, just in case the writing career is just a dream and she really *is* an adventurer.)

The boring part: A full time author and cover artist, Mina can usually be found hunched over a keyboard or graphics tablet, frantically trying to get the images and words in her head out and onto the screen before they drive her mad. She's addicted to coffee and would like to be addicted to chocolate, but unfortunately chocolate dislikes her.

Spotlight: Behind at Work by Petrea Algar

WARNINGS: This title contains sexual situations, graphic language, oral sex, anal sex and very questionable workplace behavior.

18+ Blurb:

Striking like lightning, he fisted her hair and raised her head. She grimaced for a moment, the sharp tingle of pain making its point before easing to a warm discomfort. If he’d meant to truly hurt her, she knew he had the power. As it was, the sting of pulled hair just heightened the awe she felt for his strength, and for her own ability to get under his skin. She gradually curled her mouth into a full smile and blew him a cheeky little kiss.

"You don’t just want me to suck it, do you, Lukey? You want to fuck my pretty mouth. Deep.  Don’t you?"

Miranda met his gaze and cocked one eyebrow. She knew nobody ever went close to defying him, let alone taunting him so blatantly.

The masculine spice of his cock filled her senses and at that moment there was nothing she wanted more than to wrap her lips around the thickness of his hard shaft. To tease at the head of him, send shocks of pleasure down the length of him.
