But there are two things he refuses to do—one, be paid for sex. Two, let himself fall for his beautiful new neighbor. She’s too pure and sweet for him. And that sadness in her eyes… he doesn’t want know the cause of it. He has too many problems of his own.
A war widow at only twenty-two, Brooklyn Reeves has lived a shadowed existence for two years. Desperate to start over, she moves to Forrestville, never dreaming her new neighbor would be so sexy—not that she wants a relationship of any kind with him. Besides, he’s completely hostile and rude anytime they run into one another. Unfortunately, he’s also her handyman, and she’s forced to repeatedly call on him when one thing after another goes wrong with her rental house.
Only, as spring turns to summer, Brooklyn begins to sees a new side to Parker—one that makes her reconsider her opinion of him. Sparks fly, igniting a hunger that neither of them can resist.
But are either of them prepared for the consequences, once Parker’s dirty little secret comes to light?
Review - 4 Stars!
A young widowed woman finds love again with a man with his own dark past. A short, simple storyline for such an emotional read. Between that and the cover, I decided to try it out.
I can't really expand on the storyline without giving anything away really, just suffice it to say, it was simple, but it didn't need to be much more involved. The dramas, misunderstandings, and hurt between a blooming couple all come in this novel and in such a way as to not leave you disastified.
I like Brooklyn although I didn't relate well with her, exactly. I felt a bit disconnected from her. I really liked Parker, but then again, I do like damaged men in novels. Both were well rounded and had thorough histories, although I'm still a bit confused on why exactly Brooklyn was a bit distant with her parents. Sad to say, though, my favorite character in the novel was not a major character. It was Brooklyn's boss. ^_^; The chemistry was definitely there, although I felt they went from confusion to jumping each other in such a confusing way sometimes, I wondered if I had skipped something and would go back to reread the scene.
The writing overall was well-done, although some of the more dramatic dialog felt a bit forced to me. A few other places had some awkwardness but the overall feeling disappeared once the story moved along.
Overall, I really enjoyed the read and want to go back and read the rest in the series. 4 stars!
