In an instant, Detective Morgan Carbone's life changes from day to night. Sociopath, serial killer and charmer, David McAllister won't reveal where the bodies of several young women are located but Morgan is determined to get answers. She gets more than she bargained for when during an interrogation he attacks her by sinking his teeth into her hand. Though the wound heals quickly and perfectly, it leaves her with an insatiable bloodlust as she has now turned into a werewolf like her serial killer nemesis. With her world no longer as she knew it, she is propelled into a dramatic, action-packed journey that includes being forced to leave the country to kill an ancient vampiress. However, when Morgan sees her intended target, she finds that not only does the woman remind her of her one true love whom she lost years before, but she is falling for her as hard as she did with her former lover. Now Morgan must decide whether to complete her mission or risk her own life by giving in to her heart's desire.
All night she dreamt of blood. The crackle and crunch of bones made her uneasy.
Morgan gasped and kicked the sheets off her body until she forced herself awake. Her head throbbed with pain. She smelled like sweat and fear, and there was something stuck between her teeth. She pried at it with her fingernails but was unsuccessful. She let out a frustrated groan and ran into the bathroom, where she grabbed a bit of dental floss. The thin piece of white string slid back and forth between her molars. She let out a sigh of relief when she felt whatever it was come loose.
Probably a piece of chicken from yesterday’s lunch.
She felt the large piece of skin between her thumb and index finger. Only it had…ridges. She frowned.
She went to the living room and put on her glasses. They blurred her vision.
“What the…?” she muttered out loud as she took them off. Morgan stared at her glasses as though she were looking at them for the first time. That was when she realized that she had made it to the bathroom without them. She also noticed that she hadn’t turned on a single light in the house. It was completely dark, yet she could see everything as though all of the light bulbs had been switched on.
She studied the item she had had lodged in her mouth. Skin. Human skin. She could tell because there was a fingerprint.
“Oh my God,” she whispered.
A little bit of bile ran up her throat. She made it to the bathroom in time to vomit. She mumbled a prayer as she reached for the knob to flush the toilet. Her hand remained frozen as she noticed something floating on the water. It was a mix between pink and blue-grey. With a trembling hand, she reached in and picked it up.
She tossed the item and watched in horror as it flew half way across the bathroom. It bounced across the floor. She pushed herself away from it until her back touched the cold bathroom wall. It was a finger… a quarter of a woman’s pinky finger.
Then…she thought about what happened to her two weeks ago.
Morgan Carbone: When we meet Morgan in the epilogue she’s a very serious detective and a little OCD. Everything has to be in order and she uses hand sanitizer obsessively. She also has a reputation for being a bit of a ball-buster. But she is an amazing detective and always gets her man.
After her transformation (she gets bitten and turns into a werewolf), everything that tied her to her humanity gets a little scrambled. She continuously has to fight the werewolf inside of her to maintain some of her humanity intact.
Physical description: She’s average height, black hair, dark blue eyes, and she is of Italian descent.
Elizabeth Bathory: Elizabeth Bathory (aka The Blood Countess, and Erzebet Bathory de Ecsed) was a real woman that lived in the 15th century, she was one of the first female serial killers. She believed that if she bathed in the blood of virgins that she would live forever and remain eternally youthful. I thought she was an intriguing character that I could turn into a villain in a novel. That novel ended up being Morgan.
In this book, Elizabeth is still up to her old tricks, except she’s a bit more discreet about who she kills. She is also a brilliant business woman, reads all of the newspapers around the world and keeps herself knowledgeable on everything that is going on in the world (even though she spends most of her time in her castle in the mountains). She is definitely intrigued when she meets Morgan and that is the only thing that stops her from killing her the moment they meet.
Physical description: She is short, large black eyes, long auburn hair, and she likes to wear corsets and gowns.
I think this was an amazing book. I read through it in two days, I just couldn't put it down. There was excitement and intrigue throughout the entire story. This author just jumps right into everything. I loved it. My only wish was that it was longer, and I hope she does more to expand on this story.
Through the whole book I kept expecting Elizabeth to really be Sofia, I wanted her to be Sofia so they could live happily ever after together.
I honestly wasnt sure of Morgan, at first I thought she was a cold blood thirty beast. But once she meets Elizabeth her softer side comes out. You get to see how loyal and loving she really is. I loved how her character developed. It was beautiful really.
I absolutely adore this book and cannot wait for more from this amazing author. If I could give 10 stars i would but I guess 5 will have to do. lol
