Reviews: The Guild Hunter Series by Nalini Singh (Part Two)

Continued from the previous Guild Hunter series reviews!

Weapons Training (Guild Hunter #2.5)

Free short story in Nalini Singh's Newsletter.

A short story about Jessamy and Galen.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Guild Hunter series, this story features Galen, Weaponsmaster to the Archangel Raphael, and Jessamy, Historian of the angelic race and teacher of their young.

For Guild Hunter fans, this story takes place during Archangel’s Kiss, after Galen has just completed a training session with Elena.

Find it on the author’s website here!

Review - 4 stars!

So short and so sweet, especially if anyone has read Angels’ Dance.  I loved it!  Although it was too short to really give any criticism, I was glad for the glimpse into Galen and Jessamy’s romance four hundred years after they get together.  Love it!

Archangel’s Consort (Guild Hunter #3)

Nalini Singh steps back into the shadows of her "heartbreakingly original"* world where angels rule, vampires serve, and the innocent can pay the greatest price of all...

Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux and her lover, the lethally beautiful archangel Raphael, have returned home to New York only to face an uncompromising new evil...

A vampire has attacked a girls' school--the assault one of sheer, vicious madness--and it is only the first act. Rampant bloodlust takes vampire after vampire, threatening to make the streets run with blood. Then Raphael himself begins to show signs of an uncontrolled rage, as inexplicable storms darken the city skyline and the earth itself shudders.

The omens are suddenly terrifyingly clear.

An ancient and malevolent immortal is rising. The violent winds whisper her name: Caliane. She has returned to reclaim her son, Raphael. Only one thing stands in her way: Elena, the consort who must be destroyed...

Review - 5 stars!

Is anyone sensing a theme here?  I have yet to rate an entire series as fives so let’s see how this one goes!

I was again thrilled beyond measure that the series continues with Raphael and Elena.  I won’t repeat the happiness I felt at it.

The Good:

As before the love and passion between Raphael and Elena keep me going in this book, but I’ve already gone on and on about that during book two’s review.  So I’m going to point out the fact that Nalini Singh also kept me guessing throughout this one as to whether or not it WAS Raphael’s mother rising or what was going on.  They hinted it, then they hinted it wasn’t, then again it was, and so on.  So by the time everything came together you had no idea what was going on.  Made finishing this novel a must!

The Bad:

As always, not much other than I really, really wanted more!

5 stars once again!

Angel’s Wolf (Guild Hunter #3.5)

Warrior angels, vampire hunters, and angels gone bad heat up this altogether sizzling paranormal alternate universe, from the bestselling author Nalini Singh.

Angels' Wolf is a tale of flirtation and danger set in the Guild Hunter world. Noel has been promoted, but in the Guild Hunter world that's not always as positive as it sounds. And now that he's working with the beautiful, dangerous, seductive Nimra there are a whole host of new risks he has to contend with... Nimra is drawn to the mysterious Noel, sent to her by an angel, defiant and intense and oh-so-intriguing. Is their an alliance to be forged between them, or is it a matter of time before one of them becomes the others prey ...

This is a compelling, sexy addition to the Guild Hunter universe.

Review - 4 stars!

For those who can’t remember, during one of the previous Guild Hunter novels one of the vampires was brutalized very badly.  This is his story.  I wasn’t all fired up to read this one because it was a minor character’s story, but I am on a mission here, so I delved right in!

The Good:

As always, there was an excellent story and excellent character building for such short installment of the Guild Hunter series.  You get a glimpse of angel’s territory under Raphael and her court and the healing of Noel after the brutality he suffered.

Plus, a female angel and a male vampire.  That is new to this series.  Most are mortal women in love with powerful vampires, angels or archangels.  Or even an angel woman in love with another angel.  But not a female angel hooking up with a vampire.  It was nice to see the norm change in this story.

The Bad:

The only things I wasn’t gung-ho about were the fact it was about an angel unheard of and a minor vampire from the previous books.  So it wasn’t any of the secondary characters you know and love.  However, it didn’t really detract from the story much.  This though is my personal preference though. I love immersing myself into my favorite characters in my favorite world so much I probably would overdose if I could!

4 stars!

Archangel’s Blade (Guild Hunter #4)

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh is back in the shadows of a deadly, beautiful world where angels rule, vampires serve, and one female hunter must crawl out of the darkness to survive...

The severed head marked by a distinctive tattoo on its cheek should have been a Guild case, but dark instincts honed over hundreds of years of life compel the vampire Dmitri to take control. There is something twisted about this death, something that whispers of centuries long past - but Dmitri's need to discover the truth is nothing to the vicious strength of his response to the hunter assigned to decipher the tattoo.

Savaged in a brutal attack that almost killed her, Honor is nowhere near ready to come face to face with the seductive vampire who is an archangel's right hand, and who wears his cruelty as boldly as his lethal sensuality - the same vampire who has been her secret obsession since the day she was old enough to understand the inexplicable, violent emotions he aroused in her.

As desire turns into a dangerous compulsion that might destroy them both, it becomes clear the past will not stay buried. Something is hunting, and it will not stop until it brings a blood-soaked nightmare to life once more.

Review - 4.5 stars!

I kind of have a love/hate relationship with Dmitri here.  I really disliked him throughout most of the previous books because he disliked Elena so much and was so much in Raphael’s corner…  Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing as I adore Raphael to pieces.

However, I wasn’t looking forward to this book once I realized that Elena and Raphael were regulated to secondary characters in this one.  However, every moment of this novel I adored.  I actually found myself liking Dmitri during this novel and then rooting for Honor and Dmitri.

The Good:

The amazing writing one comes to expect from Nalini Singh is present during this book and as always more of the Guild Hunter world comes alive in new and expected ways.

The Bad:

The only bad - which made this book a 4.5 instead of 5 - is that I actually predicted what was going to happen regarding Honor and Dmitri and I found the concept… surprising and yet odd to add into this series.  Maybe in later books it comes together more in a way that it explains it a bit better than ‘spirituality’.  Because despite the fact this series is about angels there isn’t much on spirituality of any kind.  Which is fine for me, don’t get me wrong.  I could have loved the book with it too!  I am just saying the way Dmitri’s love story comes together adds some to it I felt didn’t fit with the rest of the series.  So far.

We’ll see.  I’m sorry I can’t explain more without spoilers!

So 4.5 stars!

Archangel’s Storm (Guild Hunter #5)

With wings of midnight and an affinity for shadows, Jason courts darkness. But now, with the Archangel Neha’s consort lying murdered in the jewel-studded palace that was his prison and her rage threatening cataclysmic devastation, Jason steps into the light, knowing he must unearth the murderer before it is too late.

Earning Neha’s trust comes at a price—Jason must tie himself to her bloodline through the Princess Mahiya, a woman with secrets so dangerous, she trusts no one. Least of all an enemy spymaster.

With only their relentless hunt for a violent, intelligent killer to unite them, Jason and Mahiya embark on a quest that leads to a centuries-old nightmare… and to the dark storm of an unexpected passion that threatens to drench them both in blood.

Review - 5 stars!

You know for the majority of the series I didn’t have any feelings one way or another about Jason except for curiousity.  So to my shock, instead of the blue-winged angel we all love so much, whose book I keep expecting, I found out this one is about Jason.  Awesome, but bummer for me!

The Good:

Wow!

The back story to Jason that we do not even get glimpses of through the other books just pops out of nowhere and it is heartbreakingly amazing he falls in love at all!

Also, Mahiya is absolutely perfect for Jason and I loved their interaction.  I think these two are now my second favorite couple in the Guild Hunter books!

The Bad:

Was there bad?  Well, the bad was I wanted more Raphael and Elena of course!

5 stars!
